East Region Recognition For Rich Ross
Postseason honors continued to roll in for Wells College men's basketball sophomore Rich Ross, who was named to the All-East Region Second Team by D3hoops.com. Ross, the North Eastern Athletic Conference Player of the Year and All-NEAC First Team selection, became the third player in Wells history to earn such regional distinction from D3hoops.com.
Ross joins Terry Harrison (2010-11 season), and Darrell Bullock and Juan Paulino (2009-10 season) in the program's history as players named to the D3hoops.com East Region Second Team.
Ross averaged 21.7 points per game over 26 games this season. He led the NEAC in 3-pointers made with 81. He ranked third in the conference in scoring average and was in the top-15 in the conference in steals per game, assists per game, and defensive rebounds per game. Ross shot 40.7 percent from the field, 34.6 percent from 3-point territory, and 79.9 percent from the free-throw line.
On Feb. 17 against St. Elizabeth, Ross became the program's all-time leading scorer and surpassed the 1,000-career-points milestone. Ross earned NEAC Student-Athlete of the Week recognition three times during the year and was named to the D3hoops.com National Team of the Week on Jan. 9, 2017.
The D3hoops.com East Region Teams honor the top-15 players in the East Region as voted on by coaches, communications, and media representatives from a pool of all 46 institutions in the East Region which includes the member schools of the Liberty League, SUNY Athletic Conference, Empire 8, University Athletic Association members University of Rochester and New York University, and independent schools.
Ross is the one of two sophomores to be named to the top two teams in the East Region, and the other eight honorees were seniors. He was the only NEAC player to receive All-East Region recognition.
Ross helped lead the team to the second-best record in program history as the Express finished with a 17-9 record. Wells qualified for the NEAC playoffs for the second consecutive year with a 14-4 conference mark, which is the best NEAC record in school history.
