Comeback Effort Falls Short For Men's Basketball

The Wells College men's basketball team rallied from a big second-half deficit to pull within a point in the final minute of play, but eventually fell 78-75 to SUNY Polytechnic Institute on Wednesday, Feb. 14.

SUNY Poly held its largest lead of 16 points with 6:46 left in the second half before going on a 14-2 run to make the score 70-66 with 1:12 left in the game. Poly led 73-66 in the final minute but Wells got a 3-pointer from Jordyn Tyler and a layup from Tyree Fisher to pull within two.

A foul shot by Poly's Redell Freeman made it a three-point lead, and Fisher drove and scored another layup with 14 seconds left to make it 74-73. Poly went 4-for-4 at the line in the final 11 seconds of the game on either side of a layup by Mohamed Hassan of Wells. The Express got the ball back with five second left but couldn't get a shot off.

Wells held a 39-37 lead at halftime, but SUNY Poly scored the first 13 points of the second half and never trailed again.

Rich Ross led Wells with 18 points. Fisher scored 16 and David Dames had 14 points. Fisher had seven rebounds and Dames had six rebounds.

SUNY Poly is 17-7 and 13-2 in the North Eastern Athletic Conference. Wells is 7-17 overall and 5-10 in the conference. It was the final home game of the season for the Express, which concludes its season Saturday, Feb. 17 with a 1 p.m. game at SUNY Cobleskill.
