MEN'S LAX OPENS SEASON WITH LOSS TO ALVERNIA

READING, Pa. – The Wells College men's lacrosse team opened the 2012 season with a 13-4 loss to the Alvernia College Crusaders Saturday afternoon in Reading, Pa. With the victory the Crusaders improve to 1-1 on the young season while the Express fall to 0-1.

 

Four different players scored for the Express led by Jonathan Mulcahey (Fulton, N.Y.) with one goal and two assists. Daniel Munsell (Doylestown, Pa.), Nick Dolan (Englewood, Colo.), and Joe Kane (Ashton, Md.) also scored for the Express while Forrest Lambert (Aurora, Colo.) added one assist while finishing with a team leading nine ground balls. ChristopherGalluzzo (New London, N.H.) finished with 18 saves in the loss for Wells.

 

Alvernia scored four straight goals to open play in the first quarter before Munsel found the back of the net on a feed from Mulcahey with 1:52 to play, trimming the lead to 4-1 after one quarter of play.

 

The Crusaders took advantage of two Express penalties in the second quarter, scoring two man advantage goals to take a 6-1 lead into the break. Alvernia continued to find the back of the goal in the third, scoring four straight goals to open up a 10-1 lead.

 

The Express seem to find their stride late in the quarter as Kane and Dolan scored back-to-back goals to cut the lead to seven (10-3) but the Crusades would hold the Express to just one goal the rest way en route to the 13-4 victory.

 

Paul Tarnacki led the attack for the Crusaders finishing with six goals and one assists while Brian Ray added two goals and three assists. Kevin Shupp earned the victory in net with six saves.

 

David Kaus won 12 of 19 face-offs for the Express but the Crusaders would hold the advantage on the ground, scooping up 43 groundballs to the Express 25, while posting 31 shots on goal to the Express 14.

 

Wells returns to action tomorrow when they take on Albright College at 1 p.m. in Reading, Pa.
