Mariners Sail Past Men’s Lacrosse, 9-6

GENEVA, N.Y. – Freshman attack Connor Jansen (Horseheads, N.Y.) scored his first two collegiate goals, but the Wells College men's lacrosse team posted a 9-6 loss to the Mariners of Mitchell College Saturday afternoon at McCooey Field on the campus of Hobart and William Smith Colleges. With the loss, the Express fall to 0-3 overall on the year while the Mariners, who play within the North East Collegiate Conference, improve to 3-1 on the season.

The Express trailed the Mariners by a 3-0 margin through the game's first 16:04 before attack Dan Schilling (Huntington, N.Y.) struck for his first goal of the season, a man-up goal, with 9:08 remaining in the second period, cutting into the deficit. Despite two follow-up goals by Mitchell, senior Matt Duffy (Huntington, N.Y.) chipped in his first collegiate goal after drawing his first collegiate start in the game to cut the score to 6-2.

Wells rallied in the second half of the game, outscoring the visitors by a 4-3 margin, but the early setbacks prevented the completion of a comeback. Jansen, in his first collegiate game, struck twice for the Express to record his first collegiate points. Additionally, senior Daniel Munsell (Doylestown, Pa.) tallied two goals of his own in the second half including a man-up tally.

In the fourth quarter alone, the Express outscored the Mariners by a 3-2 margin after trailing by an 8-3 margin following a Mitchell goal to open the stanza. A goal by Aaron Sladyk with 3:21 remaining in regulation time re-established a three goal spread that could not be overcome by the Express.

For the Express, defenseman Hayden Shuster (Careywood, Idaho) tied for the team lead with four ground balls and also contributed a team-best three caused turnovers. Duffy and junior Alex Manley (Derby, N.Y.) each posted two caused turnovers while Manley also posted three ground balls to his credit.

Demetre Lyras recorded a hat trick for Mitchell, scoring three goals. Chris Joy contributed defensively with a team-high nine ground balls while three different players recorded two caused turnovers for the Mariners.

Peter Schenfelder picked up the victory in net for the Mariners, turning aside 10-of-16 shots on goal for Mitchell. Tyler Bischoff (Ballston Spa, N.Y.) made 14 saves in the loss, allowing nine goals to the Mariners.

The Express return to action Saturday, Mar. 23 as they host the Kangaroos of SUNY Canton at 2:00 p.m. at the South Athletic Field.
