Men’s Lacrosse Drops Heartbreaker To Houghton, 12-11

HOUGHTON, N.Y. – Despite two late goals from senior Daniel Munsell (Doylestown, Pa.), the Wells College men's lacrosse team posted a 12-11 loss to the Highlanders of Houghton College Wednesday afternoon. With the loss, the Express fall to 1-8 overall while the Highlanders improve to 3-7 overall following the non-conference tilt.

Trailing by a 12-9 margin with 9:31 remaining in the fourth quarter, Munsell scored back-to-back goals for Wells to cut the deficit to one goal with 2:21 remaining in regulation time. With 1:20 remaining, Uriel Lloyd (Bronx, N.Y.) forced a Houghton turnover following a faceoff victory by the Highlanders after the final Munsell strike. After briefly losing possession, a successful Wells clear with 21 seconds left did not leave enough time to tie the game.

In the first quarter, the Express trailed by a 2-0 margin before three quick goals by the Express granted the visitors a 3-2 lead with 6:53 remaining in the stanza. Freshman Connor Jansen (Horseheads, N.Y.), Lloyd and Munsell each struck for goals before Houghton rattled off the game's next three goals to keep the Express at arm's length.

Wells tied the game at nine apiece following the equalizer from senior Matt Duffy (Huntington, N.Y.) with 2:39 remaining in the third quarter. Tyler Kempney scored the game's next three goals in favor of the Highlanders to lift the home team late in the contest.

Munsell led the Express with five goals while Jansen added three goals and an assist for four points (3-1=4). Duffy struck for two goals while Lloyd added one goal.

Express goalkeeper Tyler Bischoff (Allendale, N.J.) made 17 saves in the loss, his first since Apr. 6 against Morrisville St. Gabriel Browning allowed 11 goals on 19 shots to pick up the victory for Houghton.

Wells returns to action Saturday, Apr. 20 as they host SUNY Institute of Technology in a 1:00 p.m. contest.
