Men’s Lacrosse Absorbs 14-6 Loss To SUNYIT On Senior Day

SENIOR DAY GAME PROGRAM

AURORA, N.Y. – Despite two goal performances from senior captain Daniel Munsell (Doylestown, Pa.) and freshman Mike Flaherty (Rochester, N.Y.), the Wells College men's lacrosse team posted a 14-6 loss to SUNY Institute of Technology Saturday afternoon at the North Athletic Field. With the loss, the Express fall to 1-9 overall on the year and to 0-4 within North Eastern Athletic Conference play. The Wildcats upped their record to 5-10 and to 4-2 in league play.

Despite SUNYIT jumping out to an early 1-0 lead following a Kevin Gardrvits strike, the Express quickly answered with a Flaherty goal with 11:15 remaining in the first quarter. Tyler Serva of SUNYIT and freshman Connor Jansen (Horseheads, N.Y.) traded goals to even the score at two aside with 9:07 remaining in the first quarter, but the Wildcats rattled off the game's next five strikes to place the game out of reach.

In total, Munsell and Flaherty each had two goals while Jansen added a goal early in the contest. Senior Matt Duffy (Huntington, N.Y.) added a goal and an assist in the defeat. For SUNYIT, Gardrvits led the way with seven points off of four goals and three assists (4-3=7) while Serva added five goals. Brett Gifford chipped in three goals and three assists in the victory.

Express goalkeeper Tyler Bischoff (Allendale, N.J.) tied a career-high mark with 19 saves, allowing 14 goals in the defeat. Jeffrey Melnik made 13 saves on 19 shots that he faced in the complete game victory.

In a pre-game ceremony, the team's five graduating senior student-athletes were honored and recognized for their contributions to the program. Munsell and Duffy were joined by Brayden Shumski (Everett, Wash.), Tim Lambert (Clay, N.Y.) and Dan Schilling (Huntington, N.Y.) at midfield and were recognized by the large Senior Day crowd of family and friends.

The Express return to action Wednesday, Apr. 24 as they host the Storm of Keuka College in a 4:00 p.m. tilt at the North Athletic Field.
