Men's Lacrosse Saddled With 8-6 Loss To SUNY Cobleskill

COBLESKILL, N.Y. – The Wells College men's lacrosse team fell to 0-3 within North Eastern Athletic Conference play after an 8-6 loss to the host Fighting Tigers from SUNY Cobleskill Saturday afternoon. Wells dips to 1-4 on the year while SUNY Cobleskill (3-5, 1-2 NEAC) picks up their third conference win in three years, with all three coming against Wells.

Junior Connor Jansen (Horseheads, N.Y.) and sophomore Alex Milliken (Hilton, N.Y.) each scored two goals while Jansen added two assists for a team-best four points (2-2=4). Freshmen Brian Buttner (Highland Mills, N.Y.) and Aaron Heisey (Mechanicsburg, Pa.) each scored a goal for the Express. Sophomore Cody Roberson (Winston-Salem, N.C.) had a team-best five faceoff victories and reeled in four ground balls to lead the team.

After one quarter, Wells and SUNY Cobleskill battled to a 2-2 score following two goals from Milliken in the first 15 minutes. Jansen followed with the lone strike in the second quarter, elevating Wells to a 3-2 lead at halftime. Through the first 30 minutes of action, Wells held distinct advantages in shots taken (15-to-9) despite losing the ground ball battle (18-to-12).

SUNY Cobleskill took command of the third quarter, firing a game-high 14 shots in the third quarter alone while scoring three goals to take a 5-4 lead. The Fighting Tigers took the lead following a Wells penalty within the final minute, scoring a man-up goal off the stick of Chris Magee.

Buttner tied the game at five with only 12:26 remaining in regulation time, but SUNY Cobleskill quickly answered with a Nicholas Goldberg goal just under one minute later. A Heisey goal dramatically tied the game at six with 8:37 left in regulation time, but two quick goals from David Meyers and Chris Wright from SUNY Cobleskill stunned the Express down the stretch.

For the second time this season, Wells posted a loss despite outshooting their opponent. In both instances, the opposing team placed more shots on goal than the Express. Only 17 of Wells' 36 shots were on cage while the hosts missed the net only eight times.

Wells goalkeeper Tyler Bischoff (Allendale, N.J.) made 12 saves on the day, allowing eight goals to the Fighting Tigers. Eric Randazzo halted 11-of-17 shots on net that he faced, earning the victory.

The Express return to action Tuesday, Apr. 7 as they host SUNY Canton at 4 p.m. on the North Athletic Field.
