Halftime Lead Slips Away vs. SUNY Canton

AURORA, N.Y. – Carrying a 7-4 lead into halftime, the Wells College men's lacrosse team allowed eight goals to the visiting Kangaroos from SUNY Canton as the visitors captured a 12-8 victory against the Express at the North Athletic Field. SUNY Canton nets their first victory in eight games dating back to the team's previous win, a 15-9 decision against Wells on Apr. 22, 2014.

Freshman Aaron Heisey (Mechanicsburg, Pa.) led the Express with three goals. Junior Connor Jansen (Horseheads, N.Y.) scored two goals for Wells while sophomore Alex Milliken (Hilton, N.Y.) joined freshmen Brian Buttner (Highland Mills, N.Y.) and Scott Boyce (South Colton, N.Y.) with one goal apiece. Cumulatively, the Express posted a season-best 13 caused turnovers and reeled in 40 ground balls for the third time this year.

Despite an early man-up goal by Chris Gamble of SUNY Canton, Wells racked up back-to-back goals from Heisey and Milliken to capture a 2-1 lead with 6:03 left in the first stanza. A goal from SUNY Canton's Ryan Cardiff knotted the score with 4:05 remaining in the first half, but Wells rattled off three-straight goals to open the second quarter and built a 5-2 lead with 12:05 remaining in the half.

SUNY Canton checked in with back-to-back goals near the midpoint of the second quarter, shrinking the Wells lead to 5-4, but Jansen and Buttner scored two goals with under 3:25 left in the half to carry a 7-4 lead into the break.

The visitors, however, rallied in the second half of the contest and posted two-straight goals to cut Wells' lead to 7-6. Heisey's third goal of the afternoon would be his team's last with 11:31 left in the third quarter as SUNY Canton would score six-straight times and hold the Express without a goal for the game's final 26:31 of play en route to the 12-8 win.

Wells backstop Tyler Bischoff (Allendale, N.J.) halted nine shots for the home team, drawing the loss. SUNY Canton netminder Corey Spuck turned aside 10-of-18 shots on goal to earn his first victory of the year.

The Express are scheduled to host the Wildcats from the SUNY Polytechnic Institute at 2 p.m. this Saturday, Apr. 11. Due to anticipated inclement weather, a change of game venue may occur – updates will be posted on the Wells College Athletics website and social media channels.
