Men's Lacrosse To Support HEADstrong Foundation

AURORA, N.Y. – The Wells College men's lacrosse team, in partnership with the Mavericks of Medaille College, will be supporting the HEADstrong Foundation at its North Eastern Athletic Conference game on Saturday, Apr. 23 at 1 p.m. in Aurora.

Wells will support the charitable efforts through the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA)/HEADstrong Cancer Awareness Week, taking place from Apr. 15 to Apr. 23. Collegiate men's lacrosse teams nationwide were asked to make a statement on the playing field by pledging a game, raising funds and wearing HEADstrong awareness accessories in support of the cause.

The Express will join the Mavericks by wearing special blue and lime green socks for the game – the monies paid for the socks will directly benefit the foundation.

The mission of the HEADstrong Foundation is to improve the quality of life for cancer patients and their families through providing essential services. Since 2007, the HEADstrong Foundation has raised over $8 million supporting over 12,000 patients and their families.

The founder of the organization, Nick Colleluori, was an NCAA Division I men's lacrosse player at Hofstra University who was diagnosed with Diffuse Large B-Cell non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma. After withdrawing from the University for treatment, shortly thereafter he recognized a lack of resources for cancer patients and their families.

Experiencing those hardships firsthand, he created the foundation to raise awareness and funds by empowering athletes to support his mission.
