SUNY Canton Scores Late To Knock Off Men's Lacrosse

The Wells College men's lacrosse team was edged in a one-goal nail-biter by visiting SUNY Canton on Thursday, March 30 at the Wells Turf Field. SUNY Canton scored the game-winning goal with 1:11 remaining in the fourth quarter and won by a score of 14-13.

It was the first home game of the season for the Express. Wells begins conference play Saturday morning at 11 a.m. with a home game against SUNY Cobleskill. Wells carries a 1-3 overall record into Saturday's game, while Canton improved its record to 3-5 with the victory on Thursday.

Wells started fast in the opening quarter. The Express built a 3-0 lead in the opening three minutes of play on two goals from Alex Milliken and one from Aaron Heisey. The Express led 5-2 and held a shots advantage of 21-6 after the opening quarter. Wells dominated possession by winning seven of eight faceoffs in the first quarter.

SUNY Canton came back in the second quarter and the score was tied 8-8 at halftime.

In the third, Milliken and Heisey scored to put the Express ahead 10-8, but Canton scored five of the next six goals over portions of the third and fourth quarters to eventually take a 13-11 lead with 9:53 left in the fourth.

The Express came back to tie the score on goals from Tanner Mingen and Heisey. Heisey's goal tied the score 13-13 with 3:45 left. Canton's game-winner came from Luke DeGaetano with 1:11 left.

Heisey scored six goals for Wells, which was a career-best goal-scoring game for the junior. He scored five goals in a game against Houghton during his freshman year. Alex Milliken scored three, Mingen had two, and Hoose and Jordan Milliken scored one each. Wells goalkeeper Nick Hallinan made 14 saves. Brendan O'Connor led Wells with four caused turnovers.

Wells converted three of its five man-up opportunities, and cleared successfully 16 times in 19 attempts.
