Wells Men's Lacrosse Defeats Houghton

The Wells College men's lacrosse team won its second-straight game to start the 2018 season with a 12-9 victory over Houghton College on Thursday, March 8 at the Wells Turf Field. Four players scored at least two goals for the Express.

Wells jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first six minutes on goals from Aaron Heisey and Tanner Mingen. Houghton answered with back-to-back goals in a span of 56 seconds and the game was tied 2-2 after the first quarter.

In the second quarter, the teams traded goals twice and the score was tied 4-4, but Wells scored the last three goals of the quarter and led the rest of the way. Brian Buttner scored twice and Carson Combs added one more on the late surge for the Express.

Houghton pulled to within 8-7 in the third quarter, but Wells answered with another three-goal run to provide some cushion en route to the victory.

Heisey led Wells with four goals, nine ground balls, and 12 shots. He won 13 of 20 faceoffs he took. Mingen had two goals and three assists with seven ground balls. Buttner scored three goals and Combs added two. Brady Hoose had one goal and one assist for the Express.

Charlie Iwuoha had three caused turnovers and Aaron Ramsey and Zach Simone forced two each. Simone made 10 saves. Wells was penalized nine times, but held Houghton scoreless in nine extra-man opportunities.

Wells improved its all-time record against the Highlanders to 5-1 in six meetings.

The Express is back home Saturday, March 10 for a 1 p.m. game against SUNY Delhi.
