Men's Lacrosse Falls In Season-Opener

The Wells College men's lacrosse team opened its 2019 season with a road game Friday, March 1 at Alfred State and the host Pioneers earned a 12-4 victory over the Express. It was the second game of the year for Alfred State, now 1-1 on the season, and the Express is 0-1.

Alfred State jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first quarter but Wells responded with three of the next four goals. Padraic Iannello got Wells on the board midway through the opening quarter on an assist from Dalibor Hanes. Nathan Ramsey scored with 2:34 left in the quarter, and Jared Shearer scored with 1:07 left in the first quarter, assisted by Iannello, to pull Wells within one goal at 4-3.

That was the last Wells goal for about 44 minutes of playing time, as the final Wells goal came with under two minutes remaining in the fourth quarter, scored by Cash Lawson on an assist from Nathan Ramsey.

The Pioneers scored eight straight goals in between the last two Wells goals.

Alfred State won 20 of 24 faceoffs in the game and dominated possession. Alfred State outshot Wells 60-17. Trevor Stein had 17 saves for Wells in his collegiate goalkeeping debut.

Ramsey and Iannello each had a goal and an assist. Lawson led Wells with six ground balls. Cory Hodge Jr. had two caused turnovers.

Wells returns to the field Tuesday, March 5 with a 4 p.m. game at Keystone College.
