MEN'S SOCCER DROPS SEASON OPENER

AURORA, N.Y. – The Wells College men's soccer team had no answer for the Cortland St. Red Dragons as eight second half goals led to a 9-0 lopsided defeat for the Express in non-conference action Tuesday afternoon at Wells. Five different Red Dragons scored as they improved to 1-0 on the season while the Express fall to 0-1 on the season.  Express goalie Mikes Birklin (Cicero) finished with a game high three saves. Evan Waggoner (Syracuse), Harald Gracholski (Memel, Germany), and Ben Bouvet-Boisclair (Ithaca) each netted two goals for Cortland.

The first half was dominated by defense as Cortland mustered only six shots while the Express were only able to squeeze off two shots. The Red Dragons put themselves on the board late in the half as Max Grant fed a beautiful pass between defenders to find a streaking Patrick Meany in the box who slid the ball by Birklin for the 1-0 lead.

The second half was a much different story as the Red Dragons scored two goals in the first five minutes and never looked back, peppering Birklin with 14 shots, while netting eight unanswered goals.

Wells College will next play Lasell College in the first game of the Skidmore College Tournament on Saturday, September 5th at 2:00 pm in Saratoga.
