Hamburg, NY – Alioune Sene scored on a header from a Derek Wheeler (Ava) corner kick with 1:01 remaining in double-overtime as the Wells College men's soccer team went on to defeat Hilbert College 2-1 Thursday afternoon in Hamburg, NY. Express goalie Mike Birklin finished with 12 saves in the victory.
Blasdimil Gomez gave the Express an early 1-0 lead, scoring off a rebound at 10:32 of the first half. The Express defense would hold until the 69th minute when a foul inside the eighteen would lead to a penalty kick by Hilbert forward Josh Taylor who would find the back of the net, tying the game at 1-1.
Birklin would come up huge for the Express in the first overtime, recording four saves to keep the game squared at 1-1. It was a back and forth double-overtime, but with time winding down Sene would score on a header from a corner kick by Derek Wheeler giving the Express a 2-1 lead with 1:01 remaining.
It was an evenly matched game as each team finished with 25 shots, while the Express held a slight advantage in shots on goal 12-11. Each team finished with 12 fouls.
With the win the Express improve to 3-7 while Hilbert falls to 0-10-1. The Express will next host SUNY IT on Saturday, October 3 at 2:00 pm at Wells.
