WHEELER EARNS NSCAA SCHOLAR ATHLETE AWARD

Aurora, NY– Wells College men's soccer player Derek Wheeler has been selected to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America/Adidas Scholar East All-Region team for his academic excellence in the classroom and his impressive athletic performance on the field.

A senior from from Ava, NY, Wheeler is the first men's soccer athlete to earn the NSCAA/Adidas honor in school history. Wheeler earned a 3.45 cumulative GPA while majoring in public affairs: government and politics, earning him a spot on the honorable mention team. 

To be nominated for scholar athlete, student-athletes must have at least a 3.30 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) throughout their career; start more than 50 percent of all games and be a significant contributor to the team; be a junior or above in academic standing at the current institution. 

A four-year captain for the Express, Wheeler started 68 games in his career tallying six goals and six assists, while also helping to lead the Express to the most wins in team history (7) and their first North Eastern Athletic Conference playoff win this past season
