Sullivan’s Strike Secures 3-2 Men’s Soccer 2OT Victory

KEUKA PARK, N.Y. – Junior midfielder Adam Sullivan (Ithaca, N.Y.) scored the game-winning goal with 4:42 remaining in the second overtime period as the Wells College men's soccer team posted a 3-2 double overtime victory against the Spartans of D'Youville College Friday afternoon in the Keuka Lakefront Classic held on the campus of Keuka College. With the victory, the Express collect their first season-opening victory since 2010 and sport an overall record of 1-0 on the season. The Spartans fall to 0-1 on the year following the loss in today's non-conference contest.

With time winding down in the second and final overtime period, Sullivan converted his fourth career goal at 105:18 of the second overtime period to secure the Express' first double overtime victory dating back to Oct. 1, 2009. The goal, Sullivan's second of the game, was also his second career game-winning strike.

Wells College trailed by a 2-0 score through 60-plus minutes of action, as Mate Tarr placed the Spartans on the board first with a header goal off of a Nick Johnson corner kick. Shawn Powers forced home a rebound given up by C.J. Bayly (Waymart, Pa.) for the second goal of the contest, tucking the loose ball inside the near post at 60:31.

The Express then scored three unanswered goals to secure the victory. Freshman forward Jonathan De La Cruz (Woodbridge, Va.) tallied his first collegiate goal, scoring an unassisted goal at 66:15 of the second half. With just under 20 minutes to go in regulation time, Sullivan scored off of a free kick opportunity for the Express to lock the game at two goals apiece.

Bayly (1-0) collected the victory in net for the Express, turning aside 9-of-11 shots on goal that he faced. D'Youville goaltender Matt Smith (0-1) drew the loss, allowing three goals on seven shots on net.

The Express return to action Saturday, Sept. 1 as they continue play in the Keuka Lakefront Classic by facing-off against the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford in a 2:30 p.m. contest on the campus of Keuka College.
