Buerkle, Christman Lift Express To 2-0 Men’s Soccer Victory

AURORA, N.Y. – Freshman midfielder Wyatt Buerkle (Cincinnatus, N.Y.) and sophomore midfielder Levi Christman (Sharon Springs, N.Y.) each scored their first collegiate goal as the Express of Wells College posted a 2-0 shutout victory over the Nittany Lions of Penn State Berks to open North Eastern Athletic Conference action Saturday afternoon at the South Athletic Fields. With the victory, the Express improve to 3-1 on the season while collecting their first conference win of the year (1-0). The Nittany Lions fall to 0-2 overall on the season and to 0-1 within conference play.

Buerkle scored the first goal of the game at 43:59 of the first half, as Christman sent a free ball toward the left post. Waiting for the ball, Buerkle took two strides toward the left corner of the net and headed home the loose ball, eluding the grasp of Nittany Lions goaltender John Murphy in the process.

Streaking up the right side of the field, Christman converted his first collegiate goal in the 71st minute of the contest, chipping the ball over the head of Murphy near the right post to lift the Express to a 2-0 lead. Freshman midfielder Justin Zywot (Niskayuna, N.Y.) collected his first collegiate point off of the bench.

Wells College goaltender C.J. Bayly (Waymart, Pa.) posted his second consecutive shutout in goal for the Express, turning aside all four shots on goal that he faced. Murphy (0-2) allowed two goals on 13 shots for the Nittany Lions.

The Express, who are winners of two straight contests, return to action Sunday, Sept. 9 as they host the Nittany Lions of Penn State Abington in a 3:00 p.m. contest at the South Athletic Field.
