Essandoh The Difference In 2-1 Men’s Soccer Victory

KEUKA PARK, N.Y. – Junior Alexander Essandoh (Accra, Ghana, Africa) and his late goal placed the Wells College men's soccer team ahead in the game for good as they defeated the University of Pittsburgh-Bradford by a 2-1 margin on the campus of Keuka College. With the victory, the Express jump out to 2-0 overall on the year following the non-conference contest while the Panthers fall to 0-2 on the year.

Essandoh's strike in the 80th minute broke a 1-1 deadlock as Trevor Fahey (West Deptford, N.J.) ripped a shot from 18 yards out that caught the lower right section of net in the 63rd minute. The offense for the Express has lifted the team to a 2-0 record to begin a season for the first time in program history.

Cumulatively, the Express out-shot their opponent by a 26-to-6 margin and held a 6-to-4 advantage on corner kicks. Senior Adam Sullivan (Ithaca, N.Y.) led the way with five total shots for Wells as sophomore Wyatt Buerkle (Cincinnatus, N.Y.) was second with four to his credit. Essandoh made the most of his offensive opportunities, firing two shots on goal and converting on one with only 36 minutes of playing time.

Alessandro Ortiz scored the only goal for the Panthers, hammering home a feed from Nicholas Walker with just under 10 minutes remaining in the first half.

Wells goalkeeper C.J. Bayly (Waymart, Pa.) collected his first victory of the season in net, turning aside 3-of-4 shots on goal that he faced. Adam Forster, the Pitt.-Bradford keeper, halted 14 shots but allowed back-to-back goals in the second half to grant Wells the victory.

The Express return to action on Wednesday, Sept. 4 as they host the Mavericks of Medaille College to begin a three-game home stand at 5:00 p.m. Stay up to date with the latest news directly from the Wells College athletic department by "liking" us on Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/WellsExpress) and subscribing to our Twitter account (http://www.twitter.com/WellsExpress).
