Kaplan’s Breakaway Secures 1-0 Victory Over Medaille
AURORA, N.Y.
– Freshman Marshall
Kaplan (Trumbull, Conn.) scored the game's only goal
in the 39th minute to lift the Wells College men's soccer team to a
1-0 victory over the Mavericks of Medaille College Wednesday
afternoon at the South Athletic Field. Wells improves to 3-0 on the
season, their best start in program history. Medaille, who played
in the NCAA Division III tournament last year, loses only their
10th game in three seasons and drops to 0-3 on the year.
With the Express breaking up the field, junior midfielder
Charles
Naula (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) slid a ball through two
Medaille defenders that caught the foot of Kaplan on a breakaway.
With the Medaille defense giving up on the play to await an offside
call, Kaplan raced forward, unopposed, and beat Medaille goalkeeper
Erik Szczerba for the game's lone goal. The goal
was the first of Kaplan's career and the fifth different goal
scorer of the year for the Express.
Wells goalkeeper C.J. Bayly
(Waymart, Pa.) was tested by the Mavericks offense throughout and
was forced to turn aside 11 shots on net that he faced.
Cumulatively, Medaille ripped 18 shots in the game while Wells only
got off eight of their own. By allowing zero goals to the opponent,
Bayly picks up the 12th shutout of his career. Szczerba draws the
loss in his first game of the year, falling to 0-1 on the young
season.
In addition to the team's third win of the season, Head Coach
Dan Kane picks up his 30th career coaching victory
with the Express.
The Express return to action Saturday, Sept. 7 as they host the
defending North Eastern Athletic Conference champions from
Morrisville State College in a 12:00 p.m. contest at the South
Athletic Field. Stay up to date with the latest news directly from
