Men’s Soccer Overwhelmed By Hilbert, 5-1

HAMBURG, N.Y. – Despite a first half goal by freshman Hunter Sowersby (Sidney, N.Y.), the Wells College men's soccer team recorded a 5-1 loss to the Hawks of Hilbert College Wednesday afternoon. The Express (5-2-1) were defeated for only the second time all season while Hilbert improves to 2-4 overall on the year following the non-conference tilt.

The Express allowed five goals to Hilbert, the most allowed to any Wells opponent since an 8-1 loss to the Mavericks of Medaille College on Sept. 9, 2009. En route to the win, Hilbert evens their overall record against the Express, with each team now staking claim to four victories versus their opponent.

Trailing by a 1-0 margin only 13 minutes into the game, Sowersby recorded his third goal of the season at 16:38 to tie the game at one apiece. Junior Charles Naula (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) crossed the ball over to Sowersby, who bent the ball away from Hilbert goalkeeper Jeremy Kraska for the game-tying goal.

Matt Hamister struck first for Hilbert and later added a goal in the 60th minute for his second of the day. Daniel Pulaski, Jonathan Davison and Blake Barber also picked up goals against Wells goalkeeper C.J. Bayly (Waymart, Pa.). Cumulatively, Bayly turned aside 3-of-8 shots on goal that he faced in the game. Kraska halted four shots on goal, allowing only the goal to Sowersby.

Wells was out-shot by a 7-to-2 margin in the first half, but rebounded to notch 10 shots in the second half while attempting a comeback. Only five of the Express' 12 shots were on net. Wells also held the decisive 9-to-2 advantage in corner kicks.

The Express return to action Sunday, Sept. 29 as they host Alfred State College in a 3:00 p.m. contest at the South Athletic Field.
