Men's Soccer Drops Heartbreaker To Medaille, 2-1

BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Wells College men's soccer team lost to the Mavericks of Medaille College by a 2-1 score on Tuesday after the game-winning goal was scored with 26 seconds left in regulation time. Wells' overall record stands at 1-1-1 following the non-conference loss while Medaille improves to 3-0 on the young season.

The Express, who knocked off the Mavericks by a 1-0 score in Aurora last season, fell victim to a goal within the last 30 seconds of this evening's contest. After a Wells player committed a foul, the Mavericks stacked the box with players. Medaille goalkeeper Tyler Brew came forward to take the free kick from about 40 yards out. With heavy traffic at the goal mouth, Bryan Sibble, a reserve player, was able to head the ball home with only 26 ticks left on the clock in the second half.

Sophomore Hunter Sowersby (Sidney, N.Y.) scored the lone goal for Wells in the 17th minute, tying the game at one aside after Alex Cholewinski struck first for Medaille at 10:37. Despite the Mavericks outshooting the Express by a 28-to-3 margin, Wells was able to hold on to the 1-1 tie until the waning seconds of the contest.

Wells backstop Michael Sciotti (North Syracuse, N.Y.) drew the tough luck loss, making eight saves and allowing two goals on the evening. Brew allowed one goal on two shots faced for Medaille.

The Express return to action Saturday, Sept. 6 as they travel to play Alfred St. in a 1:00 p.m. road contest.
