Team Effort Lifts Men's Soccer To 5-1 Win vs. Hilbert

AURORA, N.Y. – Eight different players recorded at least one point as the Wells College men's soccer team posted a 5-1 victory over the Hawks of Hilbert College on Tuesday at the South Athletic Field. With the win, Wells improves to 5-3-1 on the season while Hilbert drops to 2-5-1 overall. Head Coach Dan Kane picked up his 40th victory with the men's soccer team with the 5-1 decision.

Junior Wyatt Buerkle (Cincinnatus, N.Y.) scored his first goal of the season at 9:51 after heading home a corner kick from senior Cody Primmer (Oneonta, N.Y.). Wells possessed the 1-0 lead until freshman Carlos Valdivieso (Atlanta, Ga.) registered his first collegiate goal after tapping home a rebound given up by the Hilbert goalkeeper in the box.

Entering the second half with a 2-0 lead, the Express wasted no time scoring again as sophomore Hunter Sowersby (Sidney, N.Y.) scored his team-leading fifth goal of the season off a nifty feed from junior Max Cherry (Ridgewood, N.J.) at 47:39. At 60:58, Cherry was upended in the box to draw a penalty kick that he quickly converted with a powerful blast into the left hand corner of the net.

Despite a Hilbert goal off the foot of Matt Hamister in the 63rd minute to cut the deficit to 4-1, junior Alex van Hoekelen (Drums, Pa.) picked up the first goal of his career after hammering home a ball that was sent in off of a corner kick from senior Levi Christman (Sharon Springs, N.Y.). Aiming low, van Hoekelen's blast eluded the grasp of Hilbert goalkeeper Brandon Henry to increase the hosts lead to 5-1.

Wells goalkeeper Owen May (Warsaw, N.Y.), making his collegiate debut for the Express, turned aside three-of-four shots on net that he faced to earn the win. Henry allowed five goals while making as many saves for Hilbert between the posts.

The Express return to action Saturday, Sept. 27 as they face-off against the Wildcats from the SUNY Institute of Technology in a 2 p.m. road contest.
