Trio Nets NSCAA Scholar All-East Region Honorable Mention

AURORA, N.Y. – Three members of the Wells College men's soccer team earned NSCAA Men's College Division Scholar All-East Region Honorable Mention honors for their academic and athletic prowess in 2014, the National Soccer Coaches Association of America announced in December.

Sophomore Michael Sciotti (North Syracuse, N.Y.), junior Tyler Morris (Maryland, N.Y.) and classmate Wyatt Buerkle (Cincinnatus, N.Y.) all earned placement on the Honorable Mention list for Wells, who placed at least one student-athlete on the list for the first time since the 2011 season (Patrick Sodums '11).

To be nominated, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.30 cumulative grade point average throughout his or her career, start more than 50 percent of all games and be a significant contributor to the team, and be a junior or above in academic standing at the current institution. In only his second year playing men's soccer for Wells, Sciotti academically stands as a junior.

Sciotti, an Economics and Management major, had a standout season for Wells in goal, earning NEAC Third Team honors after posting a .836 save percentage and a league-best (and team record) seven shutouts (five in NEAC play) in 2014. His 1.04 goals-against average placed him second amongst the league's backstops. One of only four NEAC goalkeepers with 10 wins, he led all NEAC players with three Defensive Student-Athlete of the Week selections in 2014.

Morris, the team's starting center back, helped Wells to a program-record .835 save percentage in 2014 and an 1.04 goals-against average through 18 contests. Additionally, Morris was the unofficial leader in field minutes played (1,455) and scored the game-winning goal in his team's 1-0 victory over Oswego State on Sept. 17. A Physics major at Wells, Morris has earned Dean's List honors and NEAC Scholar-Athlete honors twice in his career.

Buerkle potted two goals and an assist for the Express in 2014, helping the team to average 4.89 points per game. Playing in 18 games and earning 16 starts, Buerkle scored against Hilbert on Sept. 23 and also struck against Cobleskill St. on Oct. 4. Buerkle, an Economics and Management major, has earned Dean's List and NEAC Scholar-Athlete twice.
