Cherry Powers Men's Soccer Past Pitt.-Bradford, 2-0

KEUKA PARK, N.Y. – For the second-straight day, senior Max Cherry (Ridgewood, N.J.) scored two goals for the Wells College men's soccer team. His offense was all the Express would need in Saturday's 2-0 non-conference victory over Pitt.-Bradford on the campus of Keuka College. The Express concluded the Keuka Lakefront Classic with a 2-0 overall record, moving to 2-1 overall on the year. Pitt.-Bradford (0-1-1) lost their first contest of the season. 

Across his prior three games played at the Jephson Community Athletic Complex, Cherry has six goals and has victimized his opponents for two goals in each of his last three contests at Keuka's soccer facility. He has recently passed his teammate, junior Hunter Sowersby (Sidney, N.Y.), for third place on the Wells career scoring list with 12 goals and five assists for 29 points (12-5=29). His five career game-winning goals are the second-most in team history, trailing Delroy Roberts who scored seven from 2008-11. 

With only 4:17 to go in the first half, Cherry broke up the right side and beat the Pitt.-Bradford goalkeeper by sliding the ball into the left side of the goal to lift his team to a 1-0 lead. Wells would never look back, scoring only 5:11 into the second half after Cherry put back a feed from freshman Christian Garavito (Miami, Fla.) to set the final score for the Express. 

Wells outshot the Panthers by a 17-to-5 margin in the game, holding Pitt.-Bradford without a shot through the opening half. The Express also boasted nine corner kicks while the Panthers were only granted one during the game. 

Express goalkeeper Michael Sciotti (North Syracuse, N.Y.) made two saves in Saturday's game, picking up his 10th career shutout to tie Mike Birklin '10 for second place all-time. Sciotti's former teammate, C.J. Bayly '14, holds the all-time team record with 16 blank scoresheets to his credit. Colin Frownfelter made eight saves on 10 shots for Pitt.-Bradford before yielding to Andrew Hoyt with 13:36 remaining in regulation time. 

Wells will host Medaille this Tuesday, Sept. 8 in the team's home opener at 3 p.m. on the South Athletic Field.
