Pilgrim Nets First Career Goal In Loss To Medaille

AURORA, N.Y. – Freshman Jack Pilgrim (North Kingstown, R.I.) netted his first collegiate goal as the Wells College men's soccer team posted a 2-1 loss at the hands of Medaille College on Tuesday at the South Athletic Field. With the defeat, Wells evens its overall record at 2-2 while the Mavericks move to 3-0 on the young season.

Shortly after exiting the half with the score knotted at zero, Pilgrim was able to tap home a right-to-left pass from sophomore Carlos Valdivieso (Atlanta, Ga.) just inside the right post to elevate his team to the 1-0 lead. Medaille, however, charged back with two-straight goals down the stretch to set down the Express.

Yggor Zignago tied the game for Medaille at 52:39 after a Mavericks player was upended in the goal box by an Express defender. Later in the tilt, Junior Geegba beat Wells backstop Owen May (Warsaw, N.Y.) on a breakaway to secure the game-winning goal for the Mavericks.

The Express missed several chances, including a solidly-hit post in the opening 10 minutes of play and a penalty kick opportunity that Medaille keeper Brian Arcara made an excellent save on. Both teams posted 21 shots but the visiting Mavericks placed 11 shots on cage while the Express mustered only seven shots on frame.

May was saddled with the loss despite making a career-best nine saves in the losing effort. Arcara (3-0) remains undefeated on the year, turning aside six-of-seven shots faced in the game.

Wells will play five-straight games on the road, beginning with a 5 p.m. game at Utica this Sunday, Sept. 13.
