Late Rally Upends Men's Soccer at Lancaster Bible, 3-2

LANCASTER, Pa. – Freshman Jack Pilgrim (North Kingstown, R.I.) scored both of his team's goals as the Wells College men's soccer team lost to the Chargers of Lancaster Bible College by a 3-2 margin on Friday afternoon. The loss sends Wells to its' fourth loss in six games (2-4, 0-1 NEAC) while Lancaster Bible moves to 2-0-2 (1-0 NEAC) following the first conference game of the year.

Trailing by a 1-0 margin after the first 38 minutes of play, Pilgrim tied the game with his second career goal at 38:42 after beating the Lancaster Bible goalkeeper to a loose ball. He placed his team up ahead, 2-1, just before halftime as Pilgrim forced home a pass from classmate Justin Bingham (New Lebanon, N.Y.) at 42:32. The assist for Bingham marks the first collegiate point of his career.

Despite a deficit at halftime, however, the Chargers rallied for two unanswered goals in the second half to capture the win. Josiah Groff scored both the first goal of the game and the game-winning goal in the 73rd minute to elevate Lancaster Bible in a key victory over the Express. Jared Steiner tied the game for the Chargers only 2:23 into the second half, breaking past the Wells defense and scoring, before Groff's game-winner sealed the deal for the hosts.

Wells goalkeeper Michael Sciotti (North Syracuse, N.Y.) allowed three goals on four shots faced for the loss. The tandem of Thiago Naque and Vann Sutphin made a combined seven saves on nine shots faced as the latter picked up the win between the pipes.

The Express held the 15-to-10 advantage in shots and pressured the Lancaster Bible defense into five corner kicks.

Wells will take on Penn St.-Berks at 1 p.m. this Saturday, Sept. 19 in a key NEAC road contest.
