Late Goal Lifts Men's Soccer To 2-1 Win at Hilbert

HAMBURG, N.Y. – Senior William Schanbacher (Spencer, N.Y.) scored his first goal of the season with just under 10 minutes remaining on the scoreboard to elevate the Wells College men's soccer team to a thrilling, come-from-behind victory over Hilbert College on Wednesday. The Express even their overall record at 4-4 after the non-conference win while Hilbert (1-5) loses their fifth game of the year.

With the score tied at one aside in the 81st minute, goalkeeper Owen May (Warsaw, N.Y.) scooped up a loose ball and immediately punted the ball away. The long kick caught the foot of a streaking Schanbacher who beat the Hilbert netminder low to give his team a 2-1 lead. The assist was May's first collegiate point and the first by a Wells goalkeeper since teammate Michael Sciotti (North Syracuse, N.Y.) assisted a goal on Sept. 27, 2014.

The Express played the majority of the first half down 1-0 as a goal by Matthew Buehlmann put Hilbert ahead only 98 seconds into the contest. Sophomore Jim Duchesneau (South Glastonbury, Conn.), however, added his second goal of the season after he knocked home a right-to-left cross from junior Jesse Constantino (Cincinnatus, N.Y.) to know the score at one aside entering halftime.

Sciotti earned the start in goal for Wells, making two saves on three shots, before yielding to May who picked up the win despite not facing a single shot on net. Ryan Valentine made nine saves for the host Hawks, allowing two goals on 11 shots faced.

Wells outshot the Hawks by an impressive 20-to-5 margin and held a distinct advantage in corner kicks, 12-to-3.

The Express return to action Saturday, Sept. 26 as they head to Keuka College for a 1 p.m. road contest.
