Cherry Collects NEAC Offensive Player of the Week Honors

GANSEVOORT, N.Y. – Senior Max Cherry (Ridgewood, N.J.) has earned North Eastern Athletic Conference Men's Soccer Offensive Player of the Week for his efforts this past weekend against Gallaudet University and Wilson College, the league office announced Monday afternoon.

Cherry and the Express posted back-to-back shutout victories against the Bison and Phoenix this past weekend, defeating Gallaudet on Saturday by a 5-0 margin and silencing Wilson the very next day by a 2-0 spread. Wells concluded the weekend with a 6-5 overall record and a 3-2 mark in conference play.

Versus the Phoenix on Sunday, Cherry scored his biggest goal of the weekend to put the Express up by a 1-0 margin through the game's first 26 minutes of play. Collecting a long distance feed from freshman Jack Pilgrim (North Kingstown, R.I.), Cherry roofed a ball over the Wilson goalkeeper that deflected off the crossbar and in for the eventual game-winning goal.

Against Gallaudet on Saturday, Cherry scored his team's fourth goal of the game after receiving a back-heel pass from Pilgrim, netting his fifth goal of the year. He later assisted freshman Justin Bingham's (New Lebanon, N.Y.) goal only 2:12 later, springing teammate Hunter Sowersby (Sidney, N.Y.) with a nifty outlet pass.

Earlier this season, Cherry picked up his first career NEAC Player of the Week award. Appearing in 11 contests this season, Cherry has equaled his previous career-high mark with six goals and exited play this season with 14 points (6-2=14), setting a single-season personal high. In his career, Cherry has potted 14 goals and dished out seven assists for 35 career points (14-7=35). His six game-winning goals is second all-time in program history.

Wells returns to action Thursday, Oct. 8 as they face-off against Penn College in a 7 p.m. road contest.
