The Wells College men's soccer team earned a dramatic victory when freshman Adam Whitaker scored the only goal of the match with just two minutes, 12 seconds remaining in the second half of a 1-0 win at SUNY Polytechnic Institute on Sunday, Sept. 18. It was the first North Eastern Athletic Conference win of the year for the Express, and Wells' record stands at 2-2-2 overall and 1-1-1 in the NEAC. SUNY Poly is 1-6-0 and 1-3-0 in the conference.
SUNY Poly had a 22-9 advantage in shots in the game, but Wells goalkeeper Owen May stopped all shots that were on target. May earned his second shutout of the season.
The game-winning goal came in the closing minutes and was the first goal of the collegiate career for Whitaker, assisted by Benjamen Schanbacher. Schanbacher crossed the ball on a corner kick and Whitaker was on the spot to turn it in and give Wells the decisive goal.
Wells returns to action Saturday, Sept. 24 at Cazenovia College, a 3 p.m. NEAC contest.
