Wells Men's Soccer Overpowers College of Saint Elizabeth

The Wells College men's soccer team made a quick start and defeated visiting College of Saint Elizabeth on Sunday, Oct. 9 at the Wells Turf Field by a 6-0 score. The Express scored four times in the first half and added two more in the first five minutes of the second half. Wells is 8-2-2 overall and 6-1-1 in the North Eastern Athletic Conference. Saint Elizabeth is 1-8-0 and 0-7-0 in the conference.

Wells scored three goals in a span of just over four minutes in the first half. Christian Garavito opened the scoring on an assist from Ryan Lanning in the 15th minute. Two and a half minutes later, Junger Vargas scored his first goal of the year on an assist from Benjamen Schanbacher. Soon after, Garavito scored his second of the match and 10th goal of the year assisted by Hunter Sowersby.

Saint Elizabeth has recently added men's soccer as a varsity sport and competed with just 10 players. The Express controlled possession throughout the game against the Saint Elizabeth team, but Wells also withdrew a player from the game after taking a 3-0 lead. Both halves were contested under running time.

The fourth Wells goal came with 11 minutes left in the first half. After a Wells player was fouled outside of the penalty area, Peter Paluch stepped up and took the direct kick, which he curled into the upper-right corner of the net.

Second-half goals from Fernando Escobedo and Sowersby made it a 6-0 final. Cam Davis made his first start of the season in goal and earned the shutout despite not making a save.

Wells continues NEAC play next weekend with a Saturday home game against Lancaster Bible and a Sunday home game against Penn State-Berks. Both g ames begin at approximately 2 p.m.
