Wells Men's Soccer Takes Shutout Victory Over Penn State-Berks

The Wells College men's soccer team got back in the win column with a 1-0 overtime win over Penn State-Berks on Sunday, Oct. 16 at the Wells Turf Field. The North Eastern Athletic Conference match was tied 0-0 after 90 minutes, and Wells scored the game-winning goal on a penalty kick in overtime. The Express is 9-3-2 overall and 7-2-1 in the NEAC. Berks is 6-9-0 and 6-4-0 in the conference.

The decisive play in overtime started when Wells pressured in the attacking third, and moved toward the penalty area. A defender for Penn State-Berks fell to the ground and used his hand to control the ball in the penalty area, and a penalty kick was awarded.

Benjamen Schanbacher stepped to the spot and converted the penalty for the only goal of the match at the 2:56 mark of overtime.

Wells goalkeeper Owen May made nine saves to earn his fifth shutout of the season, and ninth of his career. He is tied for third all-time in career shutouts in program history with Michael Sciotti, and his five shutouts this season is tied for second in the single-season category.

Penn State-Berks had an 18-13 advantage in shots, and Wells had a 7-3 advantage in corner kicks.

Wells will continue conference play next weekend with a Saturday, Oct. 22 home game against Penn State-Abington and a Sunday, Oct. 23 home game against Bryn Athyn College.
