Two Men's Soccer Players Earn NEAC Recognition

Two members of the Wells College men's soccer team earned North Eastern Athletic Conference Student-Athlete of the Week honors for the week ending Oct. 1, 2017. Sophomore forward Junger Vargas was the NEAC Men's Soccer Offensive Player of the Week and senior goalkeeper Owen May was the NEAC Men's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week.

Vargas, a sophomore forward from Islip, N.Y., began the week by scoring the lone Wells goal in a 2-1 loss at Penn College on Sept. 27. Over the weekend, he scored two goals and an assist in a 3-0 win over three-time defending NEAC champion Morrisville State College to total seven points on the week. It is the first-career NEAC weekly honor for Vargas.

Senior goalkeeper Owen May (Warsaw, N.Y.) picked up his second NEAC Men's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week honor of the season after a 1-1-0 week. He has earned NEAC weekly honors six times in his career and is a two-time All-NEAC selection. In a midweek loss at Penn College, May allowed two goals and made five saves. May closed out the week with four stops in a 3-0 shutout over Morrisville State College, marking the 14th shutout of his career. The Sept. 30 win also pushed May to 25 career victories, which set a new Wells record.

Wells returns to action this weekend with home games. The Express hosts Lancaster Bible College on Saturday, Oct. 7 and Penn State Abington on Sunday, Oct. 8. Both matches start at noon at the Wells Turf Field.
