SUNY Poly Edges Wells Men's Soccer

The Wells College men's soccer team concluded its 2017 season with a 2-1 loss to SUNY Poly on Saturday, Oct. 28 at the Wells Turf Field.

Prior to the match, Wells honored its five-member senior class of Jim Duchesneau, Mike Hartman, Owen May, Benjamen Schanbacher, and Carlos Valdivieso. The quartet helped Wells win 39 matches over the last four years and make three postseason appearances.

The teams traded goals early in the match, as SUNY Poly took a 1-0 lead in the sixth minute, but Wells equalized in the 10th minute on a penalty-kick goal by Junger Vargas. It was the 10th goal of the season for Vargas.

It's the third year in a row that a Wells player finished with 10 or more goals, and the feat has been accomplished by three different players in that span.

The game remained locked at 1-1 until 2:21 remained in the second half when the visiting Wildcats scored the game-winning goal when a shot rebounded off a Wells player and was converted for the game-winning goal.

Wells finished the season with a 4-11-1 overall record and went 3-7-0 in North Eastern Athletic Conference matches.
