Men’s Swimming Edges Bard College at Simons Rock

AURORA, N.Y. – The Wells College men's swimming team posted an 86-28 victory over Bard College at Simons Rock Saturday afternoon in the Wells College Aquatic Center. With the victory, the Express collect their first victory of the season (1-0) following the non-conference meet.

Junior Matthew Sleezer (Gloversville, N.Y.) started the afternoon's scoring for Wells College in the men's 200 yard freestyle, posting a field-best time of 2:01.02. Alex Lamphear (Springfield, N.H.) followed in the men's 50 yard backstroke with a time of 34.84, edging teammate Leland Holmes (Jordan, N.Y.) by more than 10 seconds. Freshman Patrick Munroe (Williamsville, N.Y.) held the best time for the Express in the 100 yard butterfly, turning in a time of 1:04.07 while Matthew VanAmerongen (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) posted a time of 25.91 seconds in the men's 50 yard freestyle to capture first place.

Sleezer also took first place in the men's 100 yard freestyle, earning five points for the team with a 52.38 time to lead the Express. Munroe also captured his second individual first place finish of the afternoon, competing in the 100 yard backstroke and notching a time of 1:08.52. Jacob Cohn (Upland, Calif.) and Christopher Flood (Hector, N.Y.) placed first and second, respectively, in the men's 100 yard breaststroke with times of 1:24.50 and 1:31.58, earning eight points total for their efforts.

Rounding out the men's events on the afternoon were the men's 500 yard freestyle, 50 yard butterfly and the 100 yard individual medley. In the freestyle event, team captain Thomas Laier (East Nassau, N.Y.) earned his team five points by completing the 500 yard event with a time of 6:08.88. Cohn led the field of three swimmers with a 30.73 50 yard butterfly time while Sleezer rounded out the first place finishes with a time of 1:03.63 in the 100 yard individual medley.

As a collective, Wells College defeated their opponent by a 181-50 cumulative margin.
