Sleezer Sets 1,000 Yard Freestyle Record In Washington, D.C. Split

WASHINGTON – Senior captain Matthew Sleezer (Gloversville, N.Y.) set the all-time program record in the 1,000 Yard Freestyle as the Wells College men's swimming team posted a 73-59 victory over Ferrum College while falling to the host team, Gallaudet University, by a 119-72 margin. Wells picks up its first head-to-head victory of the year and improves to 1-4 overall on the season.

Sleezer's time of 11:28.87 in the 1,000 Yard Freestyle earned him a first place finish in the event. By finishing nearly 30 seconds ahead of the second place finisher from Gallaudet, Sleezer set the all-time program record in the event. The previous best time in program history (11:35.55) was set by Matthew VanAmerongen last year at the North Eastern Athletic Conference Championships on Feb. 18, 2013.

After setting the program record, Sleezer had more in store, placing first in the 50 Yard Freestyle with a time of 23.12 to draw his second first place finish of the day. He also led all competitors in the 500 Yard Freestyle, completing the event with a time of 5:34.54. In total, his three first place finishes led all Express swimmers on the afternoon.

The Wells foursome of Alex Lamphear (Springfield, N.H.), Shrirang Gupta (New Delhi, India), Lucas Donnenwirth (Frankfort, N.Y.) and Tyler Fischetti (Weedsport, N.Y. placed first in the 400 Yard Freestyle Relay to conclude the afternoon's events. The four swimmers combined to finish with a time of 4:25.00, beating the second place squadron from Gallaudet by greater than one minute.

The Express return to action Saturday, Jan. 11 as they host Buffalo State College and Cedar Crest College in a 1:00 p.m. home meet at the Wells College Aquatic Center.
