Season In Review: 2013-14 Wells College Men's Swimming
Every Friday throughout the
summer of 2014, the Wells College Department of Athletics website
will look back at the "year that was". Starting with field hockey
on Friday, May 16, a comprehensive "season in review" for each of
Wells' 14 NCAA Division III varsity sports will be posted, giving
fans not only a look back but also a look forward to the upcoming
season of play.

With two North Eastern Athletic Conference championship titles dating back to the 2009-10 season, the Wells College men's swimming program has proven to be one of the most successful teams in Aurora dating back to the dawn of co-education in the Village. Despite a rebuilding season for the men's swimmers in 2013-14, Head Coach Trish George was recognized by her peers with the NEAC Co-Coach of the Year Award for her efforts with the squad.

- ALL-CONFERENCE: The Express boasted three separate First Team All-Conference performances in 2014, including the league's best 200 Yard Freestyle Relay (Lamphear, Donnenwirth, Fischetti, Sleezer - 1:41.70), 50 Yard Freestyle (Sleezer - 22.70) and 100 Yard Freestyle (50.27) times. Wells also combined for six Second or Third Team All-NEAC times in different events.
- CAPPING OFF A CAREER: Senior Matthew Sleezer (Gloversville, N.Y.) has graduated as one of the most decorated swimmers in program history. Since joining the Express as a freshman in 2010, Sleezer has set five individual records and has been a part of five record-setting relay squads. During his tenure, Sleezer has won Most Valuable Swimmer and his team's Rookie of the Year award. The Wells College Male Student-Athlete of the Year in 2012-13, Sleezer was selected as the North Eastern Athletic Conference Swimmer of the Year as a junior.
- NO "PHEAR": Junior Alex Lamphear (Springfield, N.H.) served as one of the team's veterans in 2013-14 and was part of four different All-Wells Top 10 times this past season. Individually, Lamphear set a personal-best time in the 200 Yard Freestyle at the NEAC Championships (2:10.15) while also recording the sixth-fastest 100 Yard Backstroke (1:05.85) in program history.
- ROOKIE OF THE YEAR: Freshman Lucas Donnenwirth (Frankfort, N.Y.) steadily improved his performance throughout the year in 2013-14. As a first year swimmer, Donnenwirth was a key part of the First Team All-NEAC 200 Yard Freestyle Relay (1:41.70) and assisted the Express en route to Third Team All-NEAC honors in the 800 Yard Freestyle Relay (8:38.06). At the Athletics Awards Banquet following the academic year at Wells, Donnenwirth was lauded with the team's Rookie of the Year award.
- FISH IN THE WATER: Junior Tyler Fischetti (Weedsport, N.Y.) captured Most Valuable Swimmer honors in 2013-14 after a strong third year campaign for Wells. As the third swimmer in the 200 Yard Freestyle Relay squad that took home First Team All-Conference awards at the NEAC Championships, Fischetti capped off a season that saw him set the program record in the 200 Yard Butterfly (2:20.49).
- GREAT GEORGE: Head Coach Trish George, exiting her ninth season at Wells College in 2013-14, was selected as the Co-Coach of the Year in the North Eastern Athletic Conference for her performance with the men's swimming program. The longest tenured coach currently at Wells, George has piloted five separate teams to NEAC Championship titles, the most by any men's or women's coach in conference history.

- "It was a very challenging season for the men's team. However, that didn't change the way these swimmers viewed their year in the pool. They each had specific goals that they wanted to achieve and they knew the only way to achieve them was with dedication and hard work."
- "[Sleezer] has taken his role as captain with great pride. This season, he battled through a recurring shoulder injury that would frequently remove him from the pool. Despite the injury, Sleezer would head into the weight room on his own to continue working hard."
- "[Donnenwirth] had a great mindset coming into the season. He listened and then immediately implemented the new techniques that he was taught. Between meets, he continued to learn a little more so that he would not only improve his times, but his overall technique."
- "[Lamphear] and [Fischetti] are great friends and it showed throughout this season as they were lane-mates as well. Tyler was used to leading the lane but he also understood the importance of letting his other lane-mates lead as well. Alex may have been hesitant to lead, but with Tyler and the rest of the lanes' support, he would not only lead but push the other swimmers to keep up."
