Men's Swimming Nets Third Place At NEAC Championships

COBLESKILL, N.Y. – The Wells College men's swimming program concluded the three-day North Eastern Athletic Conference Championship meet in third place, finishing with 337 points in the four team field. The host Fighting Tigers from SUNY Cobleskill claimed first place with 655 points, claiming their first-ever championship in men's swimming.

Across the three day swim meet, men's swimmers from Wells combined to post 20 career-best times and the squad rewrote major portions of the record books with 14 different times within the top-10 in team history. The Express also placed third or better 12 times across the 38 event schedule, earning NEAC All-Conference honors with each instance.

Two team records were set, including freshman Owen May's (Warsaw, N.Y.) 1,650 Yard Freestyle time of 19:11.12 on the final day of competition and senior Alex Lamphear's (Springfield, N.H.) 500 Yard Freestyle time of 5:20.46 on the first day.

Wells remains the only NEAC institution to boast five championship titles across both men's and women's swimming. Dating back to the very first NEAC swim meet in 2010, the Wells men have finished in second place or better in all but two seasons – this year, Wells was able to improve on their last place finish in 2014.

May's record-setting time in the 1,650 Yard Freestyle granted him first place amongst the field of six swimmers. Sophomore Lucas Donnenwirth (Frankfort, N.Y.) made his first career appearance in the event, posting a third place time of 22:16.91 for the Express. Later in the day, senior Tyler Fischetti (Weedsport, N.Y.) completed the 200 Yard Butterfly in 2:22.32, placing third.

Lamphear touched the wall in 2:15.22 in the 200 Yard Backstroke, placing second out of seven entrants, while freshman Shawn Snell (Hilton, N.Y.) placed fifth with a time of 2:47.47 to set a career-best mark.

The foursome of Lamphear, junior Tyler Morris (Maryland, N.Y.), Fischetti and May posted the program's fifth-fastest time of 3:40.44 to conclude the meet with a second place finish.

As a team, Wells wraps up its ninth year as a varsity program having added 17 different top-10 times to the program's record book since the start of the season.
