Men's Swimming Races Past Gallaudet, 165-71

WASHINGTON – The Wells College men's swimming program earned its first victory of the 2015-16 season on Saturday, defeating the host Bison from Gallaudet University by a 165-71 score. The Express, who also posted a 160-88 loss to SUNY Cobleskill, exit the meet with an overall record of 1-5.

Junior Lucas Donnenwirth (Frankfort, N.Y.) had his team's lone first place finish on the afternoon, completing the 1,000 Yard Freestyle in 13:11.49 to post the fastest time in his career and the 10th-fastest mark in the history of the program. Freshman Brandon Sprague (Brockton, Mass.) trailed Donnenwirth with a second place finish (14:16.59), giving the Express its lone one-two finish on the day.

Sophomore Owen May (Warsaw, N.Y.) was a part of three separate second place finishes, opening the day with the 200 Yard Freestyle where he finished just under two seconds behind the leader with a time of 2:03.27 which stands as the seventh-fastest mark in program history. Later, he missed a first place finish in the 500 Yard Freestyle by just under half a second (5:44.83), registering the ninth-best time in team history.

Senior Patrick Munroe (Williamsville, N.Y.) joined May with three second place finishes, opening with a time of 1:11.88 in the 100 Yard Breaststroke to trail the leader by only .47 seconds – he now holds the sixth-fastest time in team history. His 100 Yard Butterfly time of 1:03.05 also captured second, trailing the top finisher by just under five seconds.

May and Munroe joined Donnenwirth and freshman Austin Heil (Medina, N.Y.) in the 400 Yard Freestyle Relay and completed the event in 3:48.61, the eighth-fastest in team history. The foursome finished over 44 seconds ahead of the third place time and trailed the top entry by only 2.49 seconds.

Freshman Jordan Johnson (Brooklyn, N.Y.) earned second in the 100 Yard Backstroke (1:14.00, 10th-best time in team history) while Heil's time of 56.39 in the 100 Yard Freestyle also netted a second place finish for the Express. Senior Keith Davenport (Frankfort, N.Y.) rounded out the strong finishes for Wells, completing the 200 Yard Individual Medley with a time of 2:41.57.

Wells will compete in its final home meet of the 2015-16 season on Saturday, Jan. 9 as the Express welcome the Bengals from Buffalo State College to Aurora for a 1 p.m. contest in the Wells College Aquatic Center.
