Men’s Volleyball Earns First-Ever Doubleheader Sweep

CAZENOVIA, N.Y. – The Wells College men's volleyball team picked up two victories in a doubleheader against the Wildcats of Cazenovia College Saturday afternoon. The Express, who move to 2-4 overall on the season, pick up their first doubleheader sweep in program history. The Wildcats, in their inaugural season as a program, fall to 0-3 on the year following the losses.

In what was the first home game for the Wildcats, the Express silenced the hosts by set scores of 25-12, 25-10 and 25-13. The Express hit a cumulative .184 in the contest, utilizing a 10 kill performance by freshman Derek Nipps (Turnersville, N.Y.) to secure the victory. Sophomore Andrew Jacobs (Millburn, N.J.) contributed eight kills of his own. Additionally, junior C.J. Bayly (Waymart, Pa.) assisted 14 of his team's 30 total kills while freshman Tyler Wiley (York, Pa.) contributed defensively with six digs.

For Cazenovia, Marquis Bennett led the way with two kills on 10 total chances. Devin Purcell threw up five of his team's six assists while Tim Ackerman paved the way defensively for the Wildcats, notching 11 of his team's 21 total digs. Stanley McDaniel recorded four blocks, including three block assists, to lead the team in that category.

In game two, the Express held their opponents to under 10 points in each set, securing set victories of 25-9, 25-8 and 25-7. Leading the way for the Express was Jacobs, who recorded a .643 hitting percentage after posting 10 kills alongside only error. No member of the team tallied more than two errors en route to the victory. Cumulatively, the Express hit a combined .611 in the contest, recording only four attacking errors alongside 37 kills in 54 total attacks to set a single game program record.

Nipps threw up 15 assists to lead the team in that category while Bayly chipped in with 14 of his own. Wiley once again led the way with seven total digs to his credit. In addition, freshman John Faruggia (Mt. Markham, N.Y.) tallied a team-best five service aces and five digs.

For Cazenovia, Conor Scholefield led the way with three kills and a .125 hitting percentage. Purcell posted seven assists while Ackerman scooped up four digs.

The Express return to action Saturday, Feb. 9 as they travel to face-off against Sarah Lawrence College in a doubleheader commencing at 2:00 p.m. on the road.
