Men’s Volleyball Earns Fourth-Straight Victory With DH Sweep

BRONXVILLE, N.Y. – The Wells College men's volleyball team collected their fourth-straight victory in the second game of this afternoon's doubleheader against Sarah Lawrence College Saturday afternoon. With the doubleheader sweep, the Express even their overall record at 4-4 following the non-conference action. The Gryphons fall to 0-4 on the season.

The Express set the tone early in the first game of the day, using a first set score of 25-3 to secure a three set win against Sarah Lawrence via scores of 25-3, 25-13 and 25-14. In the first set, the Express held leads of 10-0 and 22-2 as the Gryphons only scored one kill combined with two Express errors in the set.

Freshman J.J. Podczasy (Macungie, Pa.) converted all three of his attempts for kills while Wells hit a combined .524 in the first set. Freshman John Farruggia (Mt. Markham, N.Y.) chipped in four service aces in the first set as well. Throughout the remaining three sets, the Express never trailed against the host Gryphons.

Across all three sets, the Express hit a combined .435 in the game. Podczasy led the way with eight kills in 14 total attacks while both junior C.J. Bayly (Waymart, Pa.) and freshman Derek Nipps (Turnersville, N.J.) each threw up 12 assists apiece. Bayly tied Farruggia with four service aces in the game while Nipps posted three total block assists.

The Gryphons posted 13 kills with Harrison Holmes leading the way with eight to his credit. Brent Terry posted a team-best eight assists and eight digs.

In the second contest of the afternoon, the Express utilized set scores of 25-19, 25-17 and 25-14 to conclude the doubleheader sweep. Farruggia hammered home 10 kills in 20 attacks while sophomore Paul Hernon (New Hartford, N.Y.) was 5-for-7 on his attacks without making an error. Nipps posted a career-high 21 assists while Bayly trailed with 15 to his credit. For the second-straight game, Farruggia posted four service aces.

Holmes once again accounted for the team lead in kills, posting 10 out of his team's 20. Defensively, Riley Smith posted 11 digs in the loss, including six in the first set of the contest.
