AURORA, N.Y. – Sparked by 12 kills from sophomore J.J. Podczasy (Macungie, Pa.), the Wells College men's volleyball team posted a 3-0 shutout of D'Youville College on Friday at the Frances Tarlton Farenthold Athletic Wing. With the victory in straight sets (25-19, 25-17, 25-22), the Express (10-6, 2-1 NEAC) have won five-straight matches and remain undefeated in their last 13 sets played. The Spartans (2-9, 0-6 UVC) have dropped their last nine matches.

With a win this evening, the Express also defeated the Spartans for the first time in team history. Wells entered today having lost the previous 12 sets to D'Youville, losing four straight matches since the team's inception. The five game winning streak for the Express sets a program record, edging their previous streak of four games set from Feb. 2, 2013 to Feb. 9, 2013.

Podczasy's 12 kills led the team in that category. Sophomore Derek Nipps (Turnersville, N.J.) assisted 24 of his team's 35 total kills while also contributing a team-best 16 digs defensively. Senior libero C.J. Bayly (Waymart, Pa.) posted 10 digs for the Express while freshman Mathew Armlin (Fort Plain, N.Y.) chipped in with four service aces for the Express. Podczasy rounded out the stat sheet with three service aces of his own.

Tied at 18 aside in the first set, the Express utilized Podczasy for three-straight points down the stretch. Podczasy posted a kill to elevate Wells to a 19-18 lead before hammering home back-to-back service aces to place Wells ahead for good in the match. Wells utilized three errors by the D'Youville offense to secure the first set victory.

With Armlin serving at 18-10 for the Express, Wells rattled off three straight kills as Kaylor racked up two with Podczasy adding a single kill in the process. A Nipps kill at match point elevated the Express to a 25-17 victory. Wells was able to stave off a late comeback, using back-to-back kills in the third set by Podczasy and Nipps to keep D'Youville at arm's length.

D'Youville was led by Brett Cawthorn's seven kills. Collin McMahon assisted 11 of his team's 19 kills while Alex Johnson racked up 13 digs defensively for the Spartans.
