Men's Volleyball Blanks Chargers, Loses To Lions

MARCY, N.Y. – The Wells College men's volleyball team posted a convincing 3-0 victory against the Chargers of Lancaster Bible College before dropping a five-set heartbreaker to the Lions of Penn St.-Altoona Saturday afternoon on the campus of the SUNY Polytechnic Institute. 

The Express defeated the Chargers in straight sets (25-13, 25-17, 25-20) before dropping a hotly-contested five setter with the Lions (20-25, 26-24, 21-25, 25-14, 11-15). Wells concluded Saturday with a 7-9 overall record and a 4-3 mark within the North Eastern Athletic Conference. 

Against Lancaster Bible, Wells was led by junior John Farruggia (West Winfield, N.Y.) and his impressive .429 hitting percentage after posting 11 kills and only two errors on 21 total attacks. Senior Paul Hernon (New Hartford, N.Y.) posted a career-best attack percentage of .364, posting 10 kills and only two errors on 22 total attacks. Freshman Scott Litvin (Sayville, N.Y.) posted 29 assists while classmate Jack Battumur (Denver, Colo.) posted 22 of his team's 44 digs. 

Versus the Lions, Wells saw a team-best 14 kills from junior J.J. Podczasy (Macungie, Pa.) as he posted a .379 hitting percentage. Litvin posted 32 assists while Farruggia recorded a career-high 18 digs defensively, followed by 15 from Litvin and 14 from Battumur. Collectively, Wells posted 11 total team blocks with two solo blocks and an impressive 20 block assists. 

Wells returns to action Friday, Feb. 27 as they play a pair of nationally-ranked teams on the campus of Elmira College. The Express will battle Stevenson at 6 p.m. before taking on Nazareth at 8 p.m. The tournament will conclude with a 4 p.m. match against Elmira at 4 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 28.
