Farruggia Leads Men's Volleyball to Two League Victories

KEUKA PARK, N.Y. – Senior John Farruggia (New Hartford, N.Y.) hammered home 38 kills while committing only three attacking errors for the Wells College men's volleyball team as they posted two wins in three North Eastern Athletic Conference matches this past weekend. Wells exited play this weekend with a 6-9 overall record and a 2-4 mark in conference play. 

Wells defeated Wilson in straight sets on Saturday via scores of 25-9, 25-9 and 25-21 before setting down Lancaster Bible in similar fashion on Sunday (25-10, 25-14, 25-16). The Express fell to Penn St.-Altoona by a 3-0 score in the final match of the weekend (25-18, 25-19, 25-16). 

Against Wilson on Saturday, Farruggia set the single-game program record with a .625 attacking percentage, hammering home 15 kills without committing a single error on 24 total attacks. The very next match against Lancaster Bible saw Farruggia convert 14 kills on 23 attacks, making only one error for the second-best hitting percentage (.565) in team history. He wrapped up his stellar weekend with nine kills against Penn St.-Altoona. 

As a team, Wells opened the weekend by hitting a collective .390 against the Phoenix in the straight-set victory. Farruggia's 15 kills led the way while sophomore Scott Litvin (Sayville, N.Y.) set up 17 of his team's 37 kills. Junior Liam Kaylor (Falls Church, Va.) ranked second on the team in assists, dishing out 14 passes that led to kills, while freshman Kody McCracken (Wellsboro, Pa.) notched 11 digs to lead the way. 

Wells tallied 40 kills on 76 attacks against Lancaster Bible, hitting .421 as Farruggia posted 14 of his team's kills. Litvin set up 32 kills for the Express while Farruggia contributed defensively with a team-best seven digs. Freshman Jonathan Haines (Wellington, Fla.) posted six kills on seven total attacks while classmate Ryan Turner (Liverpool, N.Y.) registered five kills on six swings – both players combined for seven block assists as well. 

Penn St.-Altoona's offense downed the Express in straight sets after posting 42 kills and only five attacking errors, limiting the Wells offense to only a .135 clip on attacks. McCracken led his team with 12 kills while Litvin posted 21 assists. Defensively, McCracken narrowly missed a double-double with nine digs while his four block assists led the way – the Express finished with 10 assisted blocks. 

Wells will take on back-to-back nationally-ranked opponents next weekend, traveling to Elmira to take on the hosts at 6 p.m. before playing Nazareth at 8 p.m. on a neutral court.
