POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The Wells College men's volleyball team wrapped up its fifth season as a varsity program against Vassar College on Saturday, falling to the No. 8-ranked team in NCAA Division III in straight sets. Wells finishes with a 10-20 overall record while the Brewers move to 23-6 overall on the year.
Wells was dispatched in straight sets (25-15, 25-22 and 25-23). The closest set for the Express came in the second where Wells possessed a 20-19 lead. Four-straight points by Vassar, three on Express errors, doomed any chance of a victory as the Brewers cruised to a 25-22 win in the middle stanza.
The Express trailed by a 23-11 margin in set three, but used one of the strongest rallies in program history to make things interesting. In total, Wells scored eight-straight points and ultimately posted 12 of the matches' final 14 points, but the early deficit was too much to overcome.
Despite missing the North Eastern Athletic Conference postseason, Wells set single-season program records in total kills (1,222), kills per set (11.01), attacking percentage (.198), assists (1,157), assists per set (10.42), serve percentage (.871), reception percentage (T-1st, .939) and sets played (111).
Sophomore Brannon Perdicho (Victor, N.Y.) finished a stellar second-year campaign with 297 kills, an individual season record, while his 3.58 kills per set also leads all players in single-season team history. Freshman Jonathan Haines (Wellington, Fla.) also established a single-season record with 27 solo blocks, narrowly edging the previous record of 26 set by Alex Battey '15.
Saturday also marked the final career matches for seniors John Farruggia (New Hartford, N.Y.), Derek Nipps (Turnersville, N.J.) and J.J. Podczasy (Macungie, Pa.). Farruggia finished with the career records in kills (797), attack attempts (2,373), service aces (120), digs (677), sets played (367) and matches played (T-1st, 109) while Nipps leads all players in assists (1,733) and assists per set (6.26). Podczasy joins Farruggia with having played in 109 matches, tying for the all-time record – his 546 kills are also the second-most all-time.
