The Wells College softball team split a pair of North Eastern Athletic Conference games against visiting Morrisville State College on Saturday, April 15 at the Wells Turf Field. Jessica Conover threw a complete-game shutout as Wells took the opening game 1-0. Morrisville came back to win the second game 6-4.
The Express stands at 5-13 overall and 5-9 in the NEAC. Morrisville is 1-17 on the season with a 1-9 NEAC record. Wells is home Monday, April 17 for a non-conference doubleheader against SUNY Canton beginning at 3 p.m.
Wells 1, Morrisville 0
Jessica Conover (2-1) scattered seven hits over seven shutout innings, and all of the outs were in play as she had no strikeouts and no walks. The big defensive play came in the top of the fourth. Morrisville had runners on second and third with nobody out. The next Morrisville hitter lined to third base, where Baylee Pearce snared the line drive and forced out the runner on third for a double play. A ground ball to the pitcher ended the inning.
The Mustangs threatened again in the sixth, with two runners on and one out, Conover recorded the next out on a comebacker to the circle and wrapped up the inning with a line out to shortstop.
The Wells run came in the bottom of the second. Lizzie Monnat started the inning with a single and went to third on consecutive sacrifice bunts. Clara DiMino hit a hard ground ball through the second baseman's legs to reach first and bring in Monnat with the game's only run.
Wells had four hits in the game, a double from Pearce and singles from Monnat, Naomi Kubo, and Sydney Cullen.
Morrisville 6, Wells 4
The Express scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning and all nine batters in the lineup came to the plate. Naomi Kubo singled and scored on a Sydney Cullen double. Sammie Jones walked and scored on an RBI groundout from Baylee Pearce. Cullen scored on a fielder's choice.
Morrisville scored all six of its runs in the top of the second on five hits and one error. All six runs were unearned, and all came after Wells retired the first two batters of the inning.
Wells scored a run in the third as Lizzie Monnat started the inning with a single and later scored on an infield error.
Cullen and Jessica Conover had two hits each in the second game. Both of Cullen's hits were extra-base hits as she doubled in the first and tripled in the second.
