SUNY Poly Sweeps Doubleheader From Wells Softball

The Wells College softball team was swept in a doubleheader at SUNY Polytechnic Institute on Saturday, April 22. The host Wildcats won the first game 14-9 and the second game 9-1 in a game that was shortened to six innings.

The Express is 5-17 overall and 5-11 in the North Eastern Athletic Conference. SUNY Poly is 8-8 in the NEAC and 13-13 overall. Wells hosts SUNY Cobleskill Sunday, April 23 in a doubleheader that begins at 2:30 p.m.

SUNY Poly 14, Wells 9

Wells built an early 5-0 lead with three runs in the first and two runs in the second. SUNY Poly came back to go ahead 7-5 but Wells tied it 7-7 with two more runs in the fifth.

The Wildcats took control with seven runs in the bottom of the fifth. Wells added two seventh-inning runs to account for the final score.

The Express pounded out 11 hits, including three each by Sydney Cullen and Lizzie Monnat. Naomi Kubo homered for Wells, her team-leading fourth home run of the season. Wells also had 11 batters reach via base on balls.

Kubo was the starting pitcher and took the loss in five innings of work. She had seven strikeouts. Jessica Conover pitched the sixth inning.

Wells scored its run in the top of the third on an RBI single by Sydney Cullen to bring in Naomi Kubo. The Express had six hits, all singles, by six different players. SUNY Poly scored once in the second, twice in the third, once in the fifth and capped the game with a five-run sixth inning.

Baylee Pearce took the loss. She allowed 11 hits and six earned runs with one walk and four strikeouts.
