Season-Opening Win For Wells Softball

The Wells College softball team began its 2018 season with a 4-3 victory over Herkimer Community College on Monday, March 12 at Myrtle Beach, S.C. The Express used a three-run homer in the first inning and another run in the fifth to earn the victory.

The season got off to a great start in the first inning when Naomi Kubo and Clara DiMino reached with singles, and Autumn Nolan hit a three-run homer to give the Express the lead.

Wells added a run in the bottom of the fifth on an infield grounder by Lizzie Monnat that scored Jessica Conover.

Naomi Kubo was the winning pitcher for Wells. She used the early run support and cruised through the first four innings. The only batter to reach for the Generals came on a two-out double in the first inning. Kubo set Herkimer down in order in the second, third, and fourth innings.

Herkimer scored an unearned run in the fifth, and added single runs in the sixth and seventh, but Kubo retired the final two batters on an infield pop up and a strikeout.

Over seven innings, Kubo allowed four hits, three runs (two earned) with one walk and seven strikeouts.

Nolan, DiMino, and Kubo had two hits each for Wells.

A second game was partially contested against Columbia-Greene Community College but was rained out in the third inning.

Wells will be back in action Tuesday, March 13 with games against Onondaga Community College and Potomac State College.
