Softball Opens Home Season With Pair Of Setbacks

The Wells College softball team played its home-opening doubleheader for the 2018 season and dropped both games against visiting Houghton College. Houghton took the first game 3-2 and won the second game 11-3.

A scheduled doubleheader for Thursday, March 22 at Alfred State has been postponed, and Saturday's scheduled home doubleheader vs. SUNY Canton will be rescheduled. Please monitor this website for further information in the coming days.

Houghton 3, Wells 2

Wells opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning. Naomi Kubo drew a leadoff walk and moved to third on a sac bunt and passed ball. Autumn Nolan delivered a ground ball to the right side and Kubo scored.

Houghton scored twice in the top of fifth on a two-run double to center, but Wells answered and tied the game in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI single by Jessica Conover to score Autumn McLain.

Houghton scored in the top of the seventh and held on for the one-run victory.

McLain, Conover, and Gabby Sawyer had hits for Wells, including a double for Sawyer.

Naomi Kubo was the complete-game pitcher for the Express. She allowed 11 hits and two earned runs with six strikeouts and no walks.

Wells opened the scoring for the second game in a row on a second-inning single by Dallia Rorick to bring in Gabby Sawyer. Houghton took the lead in the top of the third on a three-run homer and led the rest of the way.

Wells added a run in the third in on an RBI fielder's choice by Autumn Nolan and another run in the fourth which was unearned.

Houghton scored twice in each of the fourth and fifth innings and added four in the sixth. The eight-run margin after six innings made the game final.

Rorick, Jenna Devora, and Lizzie Monnat had hits for the Express. Devora's hit was a double. She was the pitcher of record with six innings of work.
