Softball Starts NEAC Season With Split

The Wells College softball team began its conference season with a win and loss against SUNY Cobleskill on Wednesday, March 28 at the Wells Turf Field in Aurora, N.Y. Wells took the opening game 5-2 and Cobleskill held on for a 9-8 win in the second game. Both teams are 1-1 in NEAC play this year. Wells is 2-9 overall and Cobleskill is 1-5.

The Express continues NEAC action Friday with home games against Keuka College beginning at 3 p.m.

Wells 5, Cobleskill 2

Wells started its conference season with a solid win in the opening game of the doubleheader. Cobleskill scored in the top of the second but Wells answered in the bottom of the inning on an RBI single by Naomi Kubo to bring in Autumn McLain. McLain doubled with one out to start the rally.

The Express added a run in the fourth on a double steal that scored Kubo from third and moved Sammie Jones to second. In the fifth, Dallia Rorick singled to bring in Jenna Devora and Wells led 3-1.

Cobleskill scored in the top of the sixth to pull to within one, but the Express tacked on two runs in the bottom of the sixth. Jordan Jacobs scored on a wild pitch and Kubo scored from third on a bunt that was mishandled in the infield.

Kubo earned the victory in the circle, with a complete-game effort. Over seven innings she allowed nine hits and one earned run. She had seven strikeouts with two walks.

Cobleskill 9, Wells 8

Wells scored twice in the bottom of the first inning. Clara DiMino delivered an RBI single up the middle to bring in Naomi Kubo and Jenna Devora doubled down the left-field line to bring in DiMino.

The Fighting Tigers took the lead with four runs in the third and added three more in the fourth to hold a 7-2 lead.

Wells fought back with three runs in the fifth. Kubo had an RBI single to bring home Sammie Jones and Devora had a two-run double to left.

Cobleskill tacked on two more runs in the top of the sixth and led 9-5. Wells scored twice in the bottom of the sixth as a single by DiMino and an error on Cobleskill allowed Kubo and Jessica Conover to score.

In the bottom of the seventh, a leadoff single by Devora started a Wells threat. A groundout moved Devora to second and a single by Dallia Rorick put Wells runners at first and third. Sammie Jones grounded out to bring in Devora and advance Rorick to second, but an infield groundout ended the threat.

Jenna Devora was 3-for-4 with three RBIs and two doubles. Kubo was 3-for-3 with a double and three runs scored. DiMino had two hits.
