Softball Battles Keuka In Doubleheader

The Wells College softball team challenged traditional conference power Keuka in the first of two games and followed with another loss in the second game of two played Monday night at the Wells Turf Field. Keuka took the first game 1-0 and won the second game 9-0 in five innings.

Wells is 2-11 overall on the season and 1-3 in the North Eastern Athletic Conference. The Express hosts Morrisville State College for two games on Tuesday, April 10 beginning at 3 p.m.

Keuka 1, Wells 0

Wells outhit Keuka 7-6 in the game, but the Express couldn't convert scoring opportunities and left nine runners on base, including in six of the seven innings of the game. Wells rallied in the bottom of the seventh with a single by Autumn McLain and walks to Naomi Kubo and Lizzie Monnat, but Keuka ended the threat on an infield grounder and came away with a 1-0 victory.

Keuka's run came on a well-placed double in shallow right field.

Kubo and McLain had two hits each, including a double by Kubo to start the bottom of the first.

Kubo pitched a complete game in the circle. She allowed one run on six hits with eight strikeouts and two walks.

Keuka 9, Wells 0 (five innings)

Wells was held to two hits in the game, a first-inning single by Lizzie Monnat and a fifth-inning single for Autumn McLain.

Jenna Devora started in the circle and took the loss. Jessica Conover pitched in relief and allowed two hits with three strikeouts in two and a third innings of work.
